About N.E.W.
What is N.E.W. School of Innovation?
N.E.W. School of Innovation is a GBAPS public charter school open to all students. We utilize personalized learning plans to deliver instruction and interventions to meet students’ needs academically, socially and emotionally.
N.E.W. also partners with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) to ensure strong vocational education by incorporating career pathways in coursework and student experiences. Students spend time each week on NWTC’s campus enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) courses. We also offer dual credit through the college for upper class students.
Where is the money coming from?
In 2018, the District was awarded a grant from the Department of Public Instruction to support planning, professional development, and creation of 21st century learning spaces needed during the 2018-19 school year that opened N.E.W. School of Innovation in 2019-20. N.E.W. is a tuition-free charter school.
What is the student to teacher ratio?
The goal of the school will be to have a 1:15-18 teacher to student ratio.
Are the teachers licensed?
Yes. All District charter school educators are required to be licensed by the State of Wisconsin and undergo a rigorous background check. In addition, all charter school staff are District employees and are eligible for benefits.

Students also have the ability to use the Green Bay Metro system, which all District students are able to ride for free.

Can you explain the grading system?
The primary purpose of grading is to communicate the academic achievement status of students to the students, their families, employers, and post secondary institutions.
- Students advance upon demonstrated mastery-By advancing upon demonstrated proficiency rather than at the end of a course or semester, students are more engaged, and teachers can direct their efforts to where students need the most help.
- Proficiencies and performance indicators include detailed, measurable, and transferable learning objectives- Clear learning targets empower students to take ownership of their education.
- Students receive the support they need based upon their individual learning plan-Staff provide students with the support, time, and flexibility they need to learn and demonstrate the skills and knowledge to successfully transition to post-secondary life.
- N.E.W. School of Innovation’s proficiency based education centers on the creation, development, and application of knowledge- Personalized learning meets each student where they are, gets them where they need to be, and guides them where they want to go. A N.E.W. graduate has the tools necessary to transition successfully to a post-secondary school, the high demand careers of tomorrow, military, and life.
Who does this school report to?
The charter school is monitored by the Department of Public Instruction as part of the Charter School Grant. N.E.W. Innovation is required to have a Governance Council, which is responsible for establishing the school’s calendar, requesting waivers of School Board policy for the needed flexibility to meet the school’s objectives, and providing maintenance of the school’s budget. District administration provides overall oversight of the charter school, maintenance of facilities, providing of services, etc. The School Board monitors the charter school and determines whether or not to renew its charter.
